“From the Andes to Jerusalem and Back: A Crypto-Jewish Rabbi’s Journey”
April 18, 2012, 7:00pm
Detroit Jewish Community Center
6600 West Maple Rd, West Bloomfield, MI
Many B'nei Anousim (crypto-Jews, descendants of Sephardic Jews forced to convert during the Inquisition) throughout Latin America, the Iberian Peninsula and the American Southwest are choosing to reconnect with their Jewish roots. Rabbi Mejía will share how he learned of his own Jewish heritage and decided to embrace Judaism, as well as discuss emerging crypto-Jewish communities in Latin America, their background/histories and contributions to the future of global Judaism.
Juan Mejía was born in Bogotá, Colombia. After discovering his family’s roots, he embarked on a spiritual journey that led him back to the religion of his ancestors. Since his ordination from the Jewish Theological Seminary, Rabbi Mejia has dedicated his life to outreach among the communities of descendants of crypto-Jews in Latin America, Spain and the United States, and teaching Torah at www.koltuvsefarad.com and through the non-profit Bechol Lashon, where he serves as Southwestern coordinator.
